Rather than lighting a room from above, behind, or through, the light source is introduced through the edge of the glass and travels through the pane by total internal reflection. It has traditionally been used for glass shelving, but adding decoration, for example, etching or sandblasting an area scatters the light until it appears to glow. Once it hits an area that has been etched or sandblasted, it scatters outwards and becomes visable, so that part of the glass appears to glow. Many types of glass are not suitable, for instance, toughened laminated glass. The PVB interlayer often picks up small imperfections in the glass and this, like an etched or sandblasted area, shows up in the final design. This includes bubbles and scratches, and so the glass has to be made from a high-quality toughened material. The other factor is the natural green colour caused by iron in the glass. Using a low-iron glass for edge-lit LED glass removes this colour and means that the RGB and white lights are not changed by the float colour of the natural glass. Consistency of sandblasting is also important, and all of these factors will result in a quality finish if carefully considered pre-project.
