Case Study: Creating a Custom Glass Wine Display for a Hitchin Pub

There’s something timeless and inviting about a well-designed wine rack. It doesn’t just store bottles—it invites conversation, adds character, and reflects the personality of the space around it. Whether it’s for a luxury home kitchen, a boutique hotel, or a bustling gastropub, having something bespoke made turns wine storage into a statement.

At Go Glass, we’ve been crafting custom architectural glass solutions since 1978, and one of our most popular recent projects was a frameless, illuminated bespoke glass wine display for a well-known pub in the heart of Hitchin.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the project, explain why frameless designs are ideal for wine presentation, and share ideas on branding, lighting, and personalising your own custom product.

Glass Wine Display Goals

The pub owners approached us with a simple but stylish brief: they wanted to create a central area for a wine display that looked as good empty as it did full, didn’t obstruct the layout of the bar area, and made it easy for both staff and customers to view the wine selection.

Their goals included:

  • A frameless display with a contemporary, clean-line aesthetic
  • Discreet, integrated lighting to bring the bottles to life
  • Custom sizing to fit
  • Minimal visible hardware

This wasn’t just a practical fixture—it was a piece of design. The idea was to elevate the feel of the space, turning wine into part of the atmosphere.

Why Frameless Glass Displays Make a Statement

One of the biggest design advantages of going frameless is visual flow.

  • Unbroken views of the wine from every angle
  • Minimal distractions—no chunky brackets or framework
  • A modern, floating effect that complements both traditional and contemporary interiors

Frameless designs are particularly popular in the hospitality industry because they give the sense of openness while providing a high-end, professional look. The Hitchin project used 10mm toughened glass for safety and security with an uninterupted view.

This level of transparency is ideal for showing off wine labels and creating an inviting glow when paired with ambient lighting.

Lighting Your Glass Wine Display cabinet: Mood, Function & Style

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of any display area. Get it right, and your wine display becomes more than just a storage unit—it becomes an experience.

For this pub project, we installed warm white LED lighting in both the top and base of the unit. This allowed light to wash across the bottles, creating an inviting glow without overpowering the room. The lighting was recessed into custom-cut housings, keeping everything hidden and streamlined.

Additional lighting options available for future glass display projects include:

  • Spotlighting specific vintages or top-shelf bottles
  • Colour-changing RGB strips for mood shifts (ideal for bars or events)
  • Dimmable options for day-to-night ambience

Lighting can make or break the mood of your space—especially with something as visual as a showcase for wine.

A Truly Custom Glass Display — Made to Measure

One of the reasons our clients trust Go Glass is because every glass wine display we create is completely bespoke.

We don’t offer off-the-shelf boxes that might “kind of” fit. Every panel is cut, polished, and bonded in our UK production centre to match your layout and design perfectly. That means:

  • Exact fit to millimetres—even around beams or alcoves
  • Adjustable shelving (glass, timber, or metal) based on bottle size or collection size
  • Options for double-sided or pass-through access
  • Tailored height and width to maximise available space
  • Integration with bar cabinetry, cellars, or under-stair voids

In the Hitchin pub, the display was crafted to fit neatly onto an unused wall with skirting cut outs and limited depth. The clean glass lines offered a counterbalance to the warm textures of the pub’s interior.

Branding Your Glass Wine cabinet with Etched Glass

Want to take your glass wine cabinet one step further? Custom etching allows you to turn the glass into part of your brand identity.

Why not add

  • Etched logos
  • Decorative patterns (grapevines, florals, geometric)
  • Frosted privacy zones if needed
  • Etched text—for wine lists, vintage years, or region maps

The designs don’t fade, peel or bubble—and can add real personality to your feature.
