Creating a Bespoke Wine Display Feature for The George & Dragon

Project Overview

When The George & Dragon set out to elevate its wine offering, the objective was about more than simply increasing storage. The pub wanted to create a feature that showcased its carefully selected collection while complementing the character and atmosphere of the restaurant.

Working alongside a joinery partner who manufactured the external cabinet housing, Go Glass was commissioned to design, manufacture, and install the glass elements and interior that would transform the unit into a striking wine display. The result is a bespoke glass wine cabinet that combines practicality, accessibility, and visual impact, turning wine storage into a genuine focal point within the space.

The Brief

The George & Dragon required a display solution that would allow customers to appreciate the range of its wine collection while maintaining convenient access for staff during service.

The cabinet needed to house a large number of bottles, integrate seamlessly with existing joinery, and provide a premium presentation that reflected the quality of the wines on offer. Visibility was a key consideration throughout the project, ensuring the collection could be viewed from multiple angles without unnecessary visual obstruction.

Rather than hiding bottles away behind a solid display, the aim was to celebrate the collection and make it part of the dining experience.

A Collaborative Approach

This project was delivered in partnership with a specialist joinery company responsible for designing and manufacturing the external cabinet structure.

The bespoke joinery created the framework for the installation, while Go Glass supplied and installed the glass doors, glazing components, hardware, and specialist wine display features. By combining bespoke joinery with high-quality glass, the project achieved a balance between functionality and contemporary design.

The collaboration ensured that every element worked together seamlessly, resulting in a finished installation that feels fully integrated into the restaurant interior.

Designing Around the Wine Collection

From the start of the project, the wine itself was intended to be the star of the display.

The layout was designed to maximise bottle visibility, with horizontal storage arranged across multiple levels throughout the cabinet. This approach allows guests to browse the collection visually while creating depth and interest across the display.

The design also prevents the cabinet from feeling overcrowded, despite its substantial storage capacity. Instead, the collection becomes an organised and carefully presented feature that enhances the surrounding environment.

The Role of Glass in the Design

Large glass panels were central to achieving the desired appearance. The glass allows clear views into the cabinet while helping maintain an open and spacious feel within the restaurant.

Unlike traditional cabinets with a solid front, the glass creates a visual connection between customers and the wine collection, making the display a natural talking point within the venue.

The transparency of the glass also helps showcase the different bottle shapes, colours, and labels, creating a feature that constantly changes depending on stock and seasonal selections.

Creating Depth Through Antique Mirrors and Lighting

One of the standout features of the completed cabinet is the use of antique mirror panels to the rear of the display.

Unlike standard mirrors, antique mirrors introduce character and a subtle aged appearance which works perfectly within the setting of The George & Dragon. The reflective surface adds depth to the cabinet, enhancing the visual impact of the wine collection and creating a more immersive display.

Combined with integrated lighting, the antique mirror backing helps illuminate the bottles and creates an attractive focal point throughout the day and evening. The result is a display that feels both contemporary and sympathetic to the character of the venue.

Hinged Glass Doors for Everyday Use

While the cabinet serves as a visual centrepiece, practicality remained a key consideration throughout the project.

The display incorporates multiple hinged glass doors fitted with slim black handles and Cardiff hinges, providing quick and convenient access to the collection during service. The Cardiff hinges were selected not only for their reliability and smooth operation but also for their clean appearance, helping maintain the contemporary aesthetic of the display.

Finished to complement the dark framework and bottle storage system, the hardware integrates seamlessly into the overall design, ensuring functionality never compromises presentation. This combination of accessibility and visual refinement allows the cabinet to perform efficiently in a busy hospitality environment while continuing to showcase the wine collection at its best.

Manufacturing and Preparation

As with all bespoke projects, careful planning and precision manufacturing played an important role in achieving the finished result.

Before installation, the various components were prepared and checked to ensure accurate alignment and smooth operation. Attention was paid to every detail, from door positioning and hardware installation to the overall fit of the glass elements within the joinery structure.

Installation at The George & Dragon

Once manufacturing was complete, the glass elements were installed within the bespoke joinery structure at The George & Dragon.

The cabinet sits above refrigerated wine storage and occupies a prominent position within the restaurant. The dark framing and shelving integrate naturally with the surrounding interior, allowing the display to feel like part of the venue’s original design rather than a later addition.

Upon completion, the installation immediately changed the character of the space, creating a dedicated wine feature that enhances the customer experience while supporting day-to-day operations.
